My bookshelf…oy! Too many books!

One book I like to revisit from time to time to check my strategic thinking is Jack Trout’s book, Trout on Strategy. It is a simple book, 8 key ideas…about 100 pages or so.

But it clarifies Jack Trout’s thinking on strategy.

As I’m sitting here looking at the rain, thinking about strategy and how to teach the concepts that will matter as we work through the pandemic and the aftermath of the pandemic and the challenges the world is facing, I’m flipping through my own copy.

Which got me to thinking what would be the key ideas I would put in my book, Wakeman on Strategy.

Here are the 10 key ideas to pursue in my own thinking right now.

Strategy is About Winning: I teach the idea of an aspiration, an ambition for your business. Roger Martin talks about needing to win. Either way, you need to know what success looks like and what you are competing to achieve.

Strategy is About Choice: Emergent strategy seems to have taught a lot of people that you can avoid choices, but to me strategy is all about the need to make choices.
